Fontodi Chianti Classico DOCG

2013

In a Nutshell

Stunning and well awarded Chianti from a top producer.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby red in colour, with perfumes of sour cherry and plums with notes of leather and tobacco. Great depth of flavour, with juicy fruit and supple tannins, giving the wine a silky-smooth texture. This wine has a great structure and a fine mineral note on the finish.

Production Notes

Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for two weeks, during which time the cap was punched down twice a day. The wine was then racked into 225 litre French oak barriques (Troncais and Allier) where it remained for 24 months before bottling. The wine was matured in bottle for six months before release.

Peppery dark-red fruit. Peppery and lively on the palate, too. Tangy, fresh and moreish and still full of youthful energy. 16.5 points

The 2013 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. My impression is that proprietor Giovanni Manetti has pulled back on the intensity in his wines, although he insists nothing has changed. Still, the 2013 impresses for its total polish and finesse. Of course, some of that may be attributable to the late-ripening vintage. In my view, slightly shorter macerations and more use of large format oak plays a role here. At the same time, there is plenty of Fontodi's signature textural richness, but also striking aromatic presence and tons of persistence. A closing burst of acidity adds vivacity to the dark red and blue stone fruit flavours. The 2013 is fresh, less heavy and also less oaky than some recent editions. This is an absolutely impeccable wine from Fontodi. 92 points

A dense and velvety wine with black chocolate and cherry character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Altogether delicious. So well done and from organically grown grapes. 94 points.
