Poggio al Tesoro Sondraia Bolgheri Superiore DOC

2013

In a Nutshell

Poggio al Tesoro are one of the finest estates in Italy to have emerged in recent years.

Tasting Notes

Sondraia has a vivid red colour, with intense notes of fresh fruit and herbs on the nose. On the palate, the wine opens up with great class and silky smoothness. Well balanced, this is a powerful wine with great finesse.

Production Notes

After de-stemming and soft pressing, fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 28-30°C for 10 days. Frequent `delestage` or rack and return, as well as punching down the cap, was used to extract good colour and ripe tannins. Post-fermentation maceration took place for 22 days, the wine was then aged in 50% new and 50% one year old French barriques for 18 months. It was released after nine months in bottle.

Pretty snazzy and smart. Nothing in the wrong place. Smells very luxurious! Bordeaux with a Milanese designer makeover. Pretty scrummy. 17 points

The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc aged in new and neutral oak for 18 months. The results are dark and luscious with generous blackberry fruit at the top. As you dig deeper, this wine begins to show nuances of exotic spice and grilled herb with dark mineral and tar at the back. The results are well proportioned and balanced.
