Fontodi Chianti Classico DOCG

In a Nutshell

Stunning and well awarded Chianti from a top producer.

Tasting Notes

The wine is deep ruby red in colour, with perfumes of sour cherry and plums leading to notes of leather and tobacco. It has great depth of flavour, with juicy fruit and supple tannins, giving way to a silky-smooth texture. It has a great structure and finishes with a fine mineral note.

Production Notes

Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks for two weeks, during which the cap was punched down twice a day. The wine was then racked into 225 litre French oak barriques, both Tronçais and Allier, where it remained for 24 months before bottling. The wine was matured in bottle for six months before release.

Press Quotes & Awards

The 2015 Chianti Classico is outrageously beautiful. Rich and seductive, the 2015 expresses the radiance of the year while retaining a good bit of translucence and energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and crushed flowers add elements of brightness to this classy, super-polished Chianti Classico. More than anything else, though, I am simply blown away by the wine's quality. A decade ago, Giovanni Manetti made darker more concentrated wines. Today, the Fontodi wines speak to finesse. The Chianti Classico is a great place to see that.

Antonio Galloni, ‘Chianti Classico 2015 & 2016: In the Right Place at the Right Time’,, 22 February 2019

This is one of Tuscany’s under-the-radar wines, as Giovanni Manetti treats this classico as a riserva in all but name. A cool, elegant, built-to-last style, which has all the hallmarks of great claret. 93 Points

Andy Howard MW, Beyond Claret: 30 great alternatives to snap up, Premium, 4 January 2019

This is a great vintage for Sangiovese, and Fontodi embraces this fact with exuberance and enthusiasm. This wine offers tight and precise fruit characteristics with crisp forest berry, cassis and dried blueberry, and profoundly steady and straight with absolutely no rough edges. This is a lean to mid-weight red with balanced acidity tucked in on the finish. 91 points.

Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Italy, Tuscany: Chianti Classico (New Releases)

Delicate and dusty on the nose with some sweetness of oak spice. Dry, more chewy than some, the oak showing more in the texture than the flavour, which is all about pure fruit. Long, chalky but supple. Reined back but complete. 17 Points

Jancis Robinson MW & Julia Harding MW, “Chianti Classico Night Tasting Notes”,, 1 October 2018

A floral Chianti Classico that shows fresh rose petals and stems, tulips and cranberries. The palate combines acidic flair with velvety tannins while remaining composed and vivid. 92 points.

James Suckling, “Two Great Vintages for Tuscany: 2015 and 2016”,, 11 September 2018

I loved this 2015, which seems to speak so eloquently of the region and the charms of the Sangiovese grape. Its purity that is so magnificent, plus its balance of ripe but extremely fresh fruit and that tanginess that characterises a fine Chianti Classico. With particularly fine tannins, it lasts and lasts. 17 points.

Jancis Robinson MW,

Pure and fresh with really admirable purity. Gorgeous and very much of this place. Long with fine tannins. 17 points.

Jancis Robinson MW, “Tuscany April 2018”,, 28 June 2018

Exuberantly youthful, it exhibits plush black cherry, thyme and liquorice alongside a refreshing juiciness, despite the warm vintage. The tannins are quite serious and this could use another year in the bottle. 91 points
