Nicosia Vulka Etna Rosso DOC

2015

In a Nutshell

The fine, complex reds from Etna are well established as among Italy's finest.

Tasting Notes

Rich aromas of red berry and spice with underlying violet notes. The palate is delicate yet complex - tannins give good structure and depth, layered with plum and bramble fruit characters, savoury hints and a touch of pepper.

Production Notes

The Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes are grown at 700m on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna on soils very rich in minerals. The cool conditions give a long, slow growing season with the grapes being hand-harvested into crates in mid to late October. The wine undergoes cold maceration for 24 hours and ferments at a controlled temperature (22-24°C) for approximately 10-15 days. Half is matured for 10 months in a combination of barriques and larger old oak casks.

Producer - Cantine Nicosia

Cantine Nicosia is based in the Etna region, on the east coast of Sicily – home to some of the country’s more premium and interesting wines. Here Carmelo Nicosia, along with sons Franceso and Graziano (5th generation), have developed their family business into one of Etna’s most important wine producers. Their Trecastagni winery is where tradition meets ultra-modern technology.
