Back in the late 19th century, Pietro Sartori’s trattoria was a bustling venue at which Veronese merchants and industrialists would meet, do business, eat – and drink. Pietro’s need for a consistent supply of good Rosso Veronese led him to buy a vineyard in Negrar in 1898, and so the Sartori winemaking story began.
The changes in the century and a bit since those early days have been many – not least the merging of Sartori”s marketing and distribution skills with the production capacity of the nearby Cantina Sociale di Colognola in the early 1990s.
That deal has given Sartori the scale to flex its winemaking muscle, while remaining true to the company’s mantra of always fighting for Verona, embodied in superlative wines such as Marani Bianco Veronese and Regolo Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso, named after the founder’s son.
These are wines that stretch the boundaries of Veronese wine without sacrificing the grapes and winemaking styles that define the local character. Bespoke wines for today’s market, in other words – aptly enough from a producer whose name is linked to the Italian word for ‘tailor”.
